Global Grain Outlook: Corn Tightens While Wheat Supplies Loosen

The September round of global supply-and-demand estimates has redrawn the grain map for 2026/27 — and the two biggest crops are moving in opposite directions. For traders on AgriExchange, the headline is simple: corn is the tightest story in decades, while wheat is getting more comfortable.

Corn: the largest deficit in over 30 years

Global corn consumption is forecast to exceed production by nearly 30 million metric tons in 2026/27 — the largest deficit in more than three decades, according to the USDA's September WASDE report. The International Grains Council (IGC) cut its world corn production forecast to 1.301 billion tonnes, down 4 million from August and 45 million below last season's record.

The apparent abundance in the United States — where farmers are harvesting another huge crop — masks the tighter world picture. Buyers covering feed and industrial demand into late 2026 should expect firm prices and competition for exportable surplus.

Wheat: bigger exporter crops, looser balance

The USDA raised 2026/27 global wheat supplies by 3.5 million tons to 1,103.0 million tons, driven by larger crops in major exporting countries:

  • Australia raised 3.0 MMT to 31.0 MMT on very favorable conditions in South Australia and Victoria
  • Canada raised 1.0 MMT to 36.0 MMT on widespread favorable Prairie conditions
  • Ukraine raised 0.6 MMT to 26.0 MMT on a record yield
  • Kazakhstan lowered 1.0 MMT to 15.0 MMT on reduced harvested area

Global wheat consumption was raised to 826.8 million tons, while trade was revised lower. The U.S. season-average farm price was lifted $0.20 to $6.40 per bushel, supported by stronger corn prices. The IGC pegs world wheat production at 820 million tonnes — up from August but still 25 million below last season's 845-million-tonne crop.

World total grains production is forecast at 2.42 billion tonnes against consumption of 2.444 billion — production still falling short of use, with ending stocks 24 million tonnes below last season. In practice: sellers with corn lots are holding the stronger hand this season, while wheat buyers can afford to be patient.
